CHAPTER I

PRELIMINARY

A.      Background

One type of text introduced in MA Hidayatul Ulum Rama Kelandungan is Analytical Exposition. This type of text is quite new for some teachers including the author himself. The author encountered difficulties in delivering the text. To overcome this, the author took the initiative to seek as much information about this text and trying to share that information.

After a long search the author finally found an article on how to make an argument (because the core of this text students are taught to argue).

PENDAHULUAN

A.      Latar Belakang

Salah satu jenis teks yang diperkenalkan di MA Hidayatul Ulum Rama Kelandungan adalah Analytical Exposition. Jenis teks ini cukup baru bagi beberapa guru termasuk penulis sendiri. Penulis menemui kesulitan dalam menyampaikan teks tersebut. Untuk mengatasi hal tersebut, maka penulis berinisiatif untuk mencari informasi sebanyak-banyaknya tentang teks ini dan berusaha untuk membagi informasi tersebut.

Setelah pencarian cukup lama akhirnya penulis menemukan sebuah artikel mengenai cara membuat argument (karena inti dari teks ini siswa diajarkan untuk berargumen).

DISCUSSION

A.      Definition of Text Exposition

Exposition is a text that elaborates the writer‘s idea about the phenomenon surrounding. Its social function is to persuade the reader that the idea is important matter.

B.      Generic Structure of Text Exposition

1.     Thesis: Introducing the topic and indicating the writer’s position

2.     Arguments: Explaining the arguments to support the writer’s position

3.     Reiteration: Restating the writer’s position

C.      Language Features of Text Exposition

•        Using relational process

•        Using internal conjunction

•        Using causal conjunction

•        Using Simple Present Tense

Sample Text Exposition

Is Smoking Good for Us?

Before we are going to smoke, it is better to look at the fact. About 50 thousands people die every year in Britain as direct result of smoking. This is seven times as many as die in road accidents. Nearly a quarter of smokers die because of diseases caused by smoking.

Ninety percent of lung cancers are caused by smoking. If we smoke five cigarettes a day, we are six times more likely to die of lung cancer than a non smoker. If we smoke twenty cigarettes a day, the risk is nineteen greater. Ninety five percent of people who suffer of bronchitis are people who are smoking. Smokers are two and half times more likely to die of heart disease than non smokers.

Additionally, children of smoker are more likely to develop bronchitis and pneumonia. In one hour in smoky room, non smoker breathes as much as substance causing cancer as if he had smoked fifteen cigarettes. Smoking is really good for tobacco companies because they do make much money from smoking habit. Smoking however is not good for every body else.

Notes on the generic structure of this example of analytical exposition
As we know that both analytical exposition and hortatory exposition are classified as argumentative essay. Both present argument to support the thesis state in the orientation.

This thesis places the writer’s position on the essay. From the generic structure, what make big different is that analytical exposition ends with paragraph to strengthen the thesis while hortatory makes a recommendation for readers.

Thesis:

This pre-conclusive paragraph states the writer’s point of view about the topic discussed. Writer has show himself in clear position of the discussed topic. Paragraph 1 is the thesis of this analytical exposition text. It states the fact of the very fatal impact of the smoking habit. Clearly the writer wants to say that smoking is not a good habit.

Arguments:

Presenting arguments in analytical exposition text is as important as giving conflict plot in narrative text. The series of argument will strengthen the thesis stated before. In this example of analytical exposition text, paragraph 2 and 3 are the detail arguments presented in a reporting fact to support that smoking is not good even for smokers themselves. Furthermore, people who do not smoke but they are in smoky area have the bad effect too from the smoking habit.

Reiteration:

This end paragraph actually is restating the thesis. It is something like conclusive paragraph from the previous arguments. The last paragraph of this example of analytical exposition points again that smoking is not good for smokers and people around smokers. However smoking is very good for Cigarette Companies

A.      Definisi Text Exposition 

Pameran adalah teks yang menguraikan ide penulis tentang fenomena sekitarnya. Fungsi sosial adalah untuk meyakinkan pembaca bahwa ide adalah hal yang penting. 

B.      Generik Struktur Text Exposition 

1.     Tesis: Memperkenalkan topik dan menunjukkan posisi penulis 

2.     Argumen: Menjelaskan argumen untuk mendukung posisi penulis 

3.     Pengulangan: ulangan posisi penulis 

C.      Bahasa Fitur Text Exposition 

•        Menggunakan proses relasional

•        Menggunakan bersama internal yang

•        Menggunakan bersama kausal

•        Menggunakan Simple Present Tense

Contohnya : 

Apakah Merokok Baik untuk Kita?

Sebelum kita merokok, lebih baik melihat kenyataan. Sekitar 50 ribu orang meninggal setiap tahun di Inggris akibat langsung merokok. Ini adalah kali tujuh kali lipat dalam kecelakaan jalan. Hampir seperempat perokok karena penyakit yang disebabkan oleh merokok.

Sembilan puluh persen kanker paru-paru disebabkan oleh merokok. Jika kita merokok lima batang sehari, kita enam kali lebih mungkin meninggal karena kanker paru daripada orang yang tidak merokok. Jika kita merokok dua puluh batang sehari, risikonya sembilan belas lebih besar. Sembilan puluh lima persen orang yang menderita bronkitis adalah orang yang merokok. Perokok dua setengah kali lebih mungkin meninggal karena penyakit jantung daripada bukan perokok.

Selain itu, anak-anak perokok lebih mungkin terkena bronkitis dan pneumonia. Dalam satu jam di ruangan berasap, tidak merokok seperti merokok lima belas batang rokok. Merokok sangat baik bagi perusahaan tembakau karena mereka menghasilkan uang dari kebiasaan merokok. Merokok bagaimanapun tidak baik untuk setiap tubuh orang lain.

Catatan tentang struktur generik dari contoh eksposisi analitis ini Seperti kita ketahui bahwa eksposisi analitis dan eksposisi hortikuler diklasifikasikan sebagai esai argumentatif. Baik argumen saat ini untuk mendukung tesis negara dalam orientasi. Tesis ini menempatkan posisi penulis pada esai tersebut. Dari struktur generik, yang membuat perbedaannya adalah eksposisi analitis berakhir dengan paragraf untuk memperkuat tesis sementara hortatory membuat rekomendasi untuk pembaca.

Tesis:

Paragraf pra-konklusif ini menyatakan sudut pandang penulis tentang topik yang dibahas. Penulis telah menunjukkan dirinya dalam posisi yang jelas dari topik yang dibahas. Paragraf 1 adalah tesis dari teks penjelasan eksposisi ini. Ini menyatakan fakta dampak fatal dari kebiasaan merokok. Jelas penulis ingin mengatakan bahwa merokok bukanlah kebiasaan yang baik.

Argumen:

Mempresentasikan argumen dalam teks eksposisi analitis sama pentingnya dengan memberikan plot konflik dalam teks naratif. Rangkaian argumen akan memperkuat tesis yang disebutkan sebelumnya. Dalam contoh teks penjelasan analitis ini, paragraf 2 dan 3 adalah argumen rincian yang disajikan dalam fakta pelaporan untuk mendukung bahwa merokok tidak baik bahkan untuk perokok sendiri. Selanjutnya, orang yang tidak merokok tapi di daerah berasap memiliki efek buruk juga dari kebiasaan merokok.

Perulangan:

Paragraf akhir ini sebenarnya sedang mempulang ulang tesis tersebut. Ini seperti paragraf konklusif dari argumen sebelumnya. Paragraf terakhir dari contoh titik eksposisi analitis ini menunjukkan bahwa merokok tidak baik untuk perokok dan orang-orang di sekitar perokok. Merokok sangat baik untuk Perusahaan Rokok
